Owens Corning Underlayment & Deck Repair: The Orlando Owner’s Guide
If your Owens Corning roof is leaking or your decking feels soft underfoot, we stock and install Owens Corning-compatible underlayment and deck repair materials here in Orlando, with most repairs running $450 – $1,400 depending on how much decking needs replacing and which underlayment your system calls for. You’ll usually know something’s wrong before you see it: a water stain on the ceiling after a hard afternoon storm, or a shingle that seems to dip slightly where it shouldn’t. Underlayment and decking fail quietly, and by the time they show themselves, the repair window is already open.
Tilehurst Roofing Orlando is an independent roofing contractor. We’re not affiliated with Owens Corning, but we work with their materials every week and know how the underlayment and decking interact with Central Florida’s rain, humidity, and heat.
Which Owens Corning Models This Applies To
Owens Corning’s underlayment line breaks into a few distinct products, and matching the right one matters more than most homeowners expect. The two most common on Orlando roofs are Owens Corning ProArmor synthetic underlayment and Owens Corning Deck Defense, and they do different jobs. ProArmor is the water-shedding layer between your decking and shingles. Deck Defense is a peel-and-stick membrane that seals around the edges and valleys where water tries to sneak in. If your roof was installed with ProArmor and a section is being replaced, you don’t automatically get ProArmor again unless someone checks: some contractors will slide in a generic synthetic and call it equivalent. It’s not always a problem functionally, but the warranty story changes when mixed products show up.
The compatibility gotcha we see most: Owens Corning’s Total Protection Roofing System warranty requires their underlayment products be installed together as a system. If you had a full Owens Corning roof put on and now a repair uses a different brand’s underlayment, that section may no longer be covered the same way. That’s the thing to know before you sign off on a $300-cheaper repair. We keep ProArmor and Deck Defense in our Orlando stock, along with OC-compatible decking in the standard 4×8 sheets and the 7/16-inch thickness that matches most Central Florida roof decks.

Signs Your Owens Corning Underlayment & Deck Repair Is Failing
- Water stains on ceilings or walls after a storm. This is the one that gets the phone call. Underlayment is the last line of defense under your shingles, and when it’s compromised, water reaches the decking and eventually the drywall.
- A spongy or bouncy section of roof when you walk it. Decking that’s been wet for months loses its structural hold on the nails. We see this most often on older roofs in College Park and the Milk District, where decades of afternoon storms have found every nail hole.
- Shingles lifting at the eaves and rakes. If the underlayment around the edges has dried out and cracked in the Florida sun, the shingles no longer have a stable bed to seal to. You’ll see them flapping on windy days before you see water inside.
- Granules piling up in the gutters, especially after a dry spell. This often means the underlayment below has aged to the point where the shingles are cooking from both sides. Orlando’s heat doesn’t just age shingles; it bakes the synthetic underlayment until it stiffens and tears.
- Dark spots or algae streaking that won’t wash off. That’s trapped moisture, and it usually means the underlayment is holding water against the decking instead of shedding it. In Florida, that’s when deck rot moves fast.

AfterReplacement Cost & What’s Included
For an Owens Corning underlayment and deck repair in the Orlando market, you’re looking at these numbers:
- Small repair, no decking replacement: $450 – $700 (remove shingles in the affected area, inspect the deck, install new ProArmor, re-shingle with matching OC materials)
- Moderate repair with 2 – 4 sheets of decking replacement: $700 – $1,100 (includes new 7/16″ decking, Deck Defense at all seams, and re-securing the shingle system)
- Larger deck replacement section, 100 – 300 square feet: $1,100 – $1,400 (full tear-off of the damaged section, new decking, full ProArmor underlayment, and shingles matched to the existing roof)
The range depends on how much decking is actually rotted once we open the roof, whether we need a full section of Deck Defense at the eave lines, and how steep your roof is. We give you a written price before any work starts, and if we find hidden rot after we open the deck, you’ll know about it and approve the change before we move forward. That’s the Kingswell Way: say the price before the work, show up in the window we gave, put the guarantee in writing. Every repair we do is covered by our written guarantee, and under the 365-Day Done Right Promise, if the repair fails inside a year, we come back and fix it at no charge.
DIY or Call Us?
There’s a version of this you can do from the ground: look for missing shingles, check the gutters for granule buildup, and after a hard rain, shine a flashlight along the attic decking for water trails. That’s safe, free, and worth doing once a season in Florida. But underlayment and deck repair is not a weekend project. You’re walking on a structural surface, removing shingles that are part of a system, and handling material that has to be sealed in the right sequence or the next storm finds the gap. We’ve fixed enough homeowner attempts in Orlando to say this plainly: the open roof is not where you want to learn on the fly. If you’ve got a failed underlayment or a soft deck, call us at (850) 303-7235. Greg Holloway walks the roof himself before we quote a number, and we tell you the price before we touch the roof – and we mean it.
FAQs
In Florida’s heat and humidity, Owens Corning ProArmor synthetic underlayment typically performs well for 15 – 25 years when installed correctly, but that lifespan drops fast if the roof was nailed improperly or if shingles have blown off and left it exposed to direct sun for months. The underlayment is only as good as what’s above it and what’s below it. Call us at (850) 303-7235 if you’re not sure what’s under your shingles; the estimate visit is free.
Underlayment can absolutely be patched and repaired in sections, and that’s what we do for most Orlando roofs. You only need a full underlayment replacement when the decking below is compromised or when the roof is being torn off anyway for a re-roof. The repair cost depends on how much of the roof we have to open; we’ll tell you the number before any work starts.
Most single-section underlayment and deck repairs on Orlando homes are done in one day, from opening the roof in the morning to clean-up before dinner. Larger deck replacements can run into a second day if the rot is more extensive than the visible damage suggested. We’ll give you a time window before we schedule and we keep to it.
We stock ProArmor synthetic underlayment, Deck Defense membrane, and 7/16-inch roof decking on our trucks and in our Orlando yard, so most repairs start the day we arrive. If your roof uses a less common OC profile, we can have it from our supplier by the next business day. We also work with GAF and CertainTeed materials for homes that have mixed-brand roofs, so the replacement matches what’s already up there.
